Coal Region Connections: The Pioneer Tunnel, Ashland

The original Pioneer Colliery operated in the mid to late 1800's. From 1911 to 1931 The Pioneer Tunnel was run by the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Company. After ceasing operation in 1931, the Pioneer Tunnel lay dormant for 3 decades until a group of community leaders banded together to create Ashland Community Enterprises. This non-profit group began work began in 1962 retimbering & retrofitting the tunnel. In May, 1963, the Pioneer Tunnel reopened as a premier coal region tourist attraction.

This Saturday from 10-5, the Pioneer Tunnel hosts its 22nd annual Pioneer Day celebration. In addition to mine tours that take you 1800 feet deep inside the Mahanoy Mountain, there is a steam train ride, lots of traditional & ethnic foods, & live entertainment. This is a wonderful opportunity to rediscover your coal region roots & it's very educational for folks of all ages. Hope you enjoyed these Pioneer Tunnel pictures from the past.
