In 1972, Atari introduced Pong--the 1st video game. It was primitive by today's standards, but it marked the beginning of the end for the pinball machines that reigned supreme for decades. In 1979, Atari introduced Asteroids & Namco came out with Galaxian. The Golden Age of Video Arcade games had begun & would continue to 1986. Space Invaders by Atari & Pac Man by Namco both appeared in 1980. Nintendo introduced Donkey Kong & Konaan came out with Froggers in 1981. Pinball machines were fading from the scene & were replaced with more sophisticated video games.
But, video games would not enjoy decades of success that pinball machines had. In 1972, Magnavox introduced your very 1st home video game system. Refinements came in rapid succession. Anybody still have an old Atari 2600 on Nintendo home video game system yet? Since 1972, there have been 8 generations of home video game systems.
I had a 1st generation Nintendo NES home system. It lasted surprisingly for years. My kids enjoyed Super Mario Brothers & the Dungeons & Dragons games growing up in the 80s & 90s.
