Coal Region Cookbook Treasure Will Be Sold At Zoostock 14 Tomorrow

COAL REGION COOKBOOK TREASURE WILL BE SOLD AT ZOOSTOCK 14 IN LANSFORD TOMORROW. Click LIKE if you support Zoostock's many volunteers who will spend the holiday helping to raise money to fight cancer. Thank you for SHARING this post to get the word out on behalf of Zoostock's dedicated volunteers.

Earlier this year WLSH Radio Lansford & Carbon-Tamaqua unit of the American Cancer Society partnered to reprint the Great Radio Ask Your Neighbor Cookbook. Only 1,000 copies were made & early sales have been brisk since the books arrived late last month. Folks are buying multiple copies for family & friends as Christmas gifts.

Cookbook history: 10,000 copies were printed in 1974 as a joint venture of WLSH Lansford & WPAM Pottsville when both radio stations were owned by Miners Broadcasting Service. This 360 page cookbook is often referred to as "Volume 1" & features 1004 local recipes shared on the Ask Your Neighbor talk show. Alice Angst hosted the WLSH show & Helen Angst was the WPAM host. Pictured below is former WLSH owner Bud Angst & his wife Alice selling "Volume 1" cookbooks at a Tamaqua sidewalk sale 40 years ago.

There was another cookbook before "Volume 1", but it only had 16 pages of local recipes. 20,000 copies of the Ask Your Neighbor Cookbook "Volume 2" appeared in 1978. Many cookbook critics say "Volume 1" was the best of the 3. That book fetched prices as high as $50 in recent years at yard sales, estate auctions, & on E-Bay. That makes the ACS reprint price of only $20 a real bargain & why so many people are buying multiple copies.

Because several "Volume 1" contributors have passed away over the past 40 years, Coal Region Connections salutes WLSH & Carbon-Tamaqua Unit of the American Cancer Society for preserving the memory & recipes of hundreds of area loved ones for future generations.

If you can't attend Zoostock 14 Monday, remaining cookbooks will be available Tuesday morning at Hiles Brothers Plumbing/Heating in Summit Hill. Call Lisa Hiles at 570-645-8405 for more information.
