FOR ALMOST 80 YEARS THIS DINER WAS A COAL REGION FIXTURE ON BUSY ROUTE 309 IN SOUTH TAMAQUA. Click LIKE if you miss the White Diner & tell us what was your favorite meal there.
The White Diner had its humble beginnings during the depths of the Great Depression. In 1932 a couple of trolley cars dating back to the 1800s were used to create the L-shaped diner. As seen below, the White Diner was once part of a gas station & was called Jake's White Diner in the 40s & 50s.
The White Diner was always a busy place, especially for breakfast. It's breakfast trade was so busy that Leiby's Restaurant during the Floyd Zimmerman era never bothered to open for breakfast. The White Diner was especially busy when Atlas Powder Company was going strong in the 40s, 50, & 60s. It was a diner for the working class--miners, factory workers, & laborers. I recall going to the White Diner with my parents & ordering a hot roast beef sandwich with gravy plus gravy over the french fries back in the 60s.
Down through the decades the White Diner had several owners & undergone a few face lifts. Tragedy struck this landmark diner in September, 2011, when a fire left the diner in ruins. The owners did rebuild the facility from the ground up, renamed it "Jones Grille", & reopened on September 2, 2013. An August 12th, 2014 posting on the Jones Grille Facebook fan page indicates the facility is closed until a partner is found.
