Today's post was suggested by many page fans & inspired by the book "Coal Country Ghosts--Legends & Lore", written by Charles Adams III. Charlie, a long-time radio veteran at WEEU Reading & writer for the Reading Eagle, has penned over 25 books on ghosts, hauntings, legends, shipwrecks, & train wrecks. More info about Charlie's many books can be found at www.exeterhousebooks.com. We strongly recommend Charlie's works. On April 25, 1925, Palm Sunday, 2 hikers on the Broad Mt. between Gordon & Heckschersville, were walking on an old logging road just off the main road. A flock of crows attracted the hikers to a small clearing where they discovered a horror almost beyond words.
Lying on scorched grass was the mutilated, badly-burned body of a young woman. Her skull was smashed in & there were gashes on her arms & scalp. This murder on the mountain sparked an intense police investigation that yielded little. The perpetrator of this dastardly deed was never discovered. The girl was believed to be between ages 16-20, but she has never been identified to this day. Some say she was a runaway & others speculate she worked at a nearby "house of ill repute".
It has been said her translucent, ghostly figure roams the forest in the area of where the body was discovered. Some folks say their car headlights have dimmed traveling over the Broad Mt., while others claim "spirit energies" have shut down car engines & radios.
For decades, thousands have flocked to the Broad Mt. hoping to catch a glimpse of the restless spirit. Traffic jams on the Broad Mt. were reported especially around Halloween, the nights of a full moon, & on the anniversary of the murder.
It's also reported years ago that a former Gordon area car dealer & 2 buddies embellished spirit sighting reports by putting up bed sheets & tying mannequins to trees. Paranormal investigators have combed the area & have shared mixed reviews about the area.
Next week will feature a full moon & lunar eclipse. Halloween is just over a month away. Have we "intrigued" you enough for you to make a pilgrimage to the Broad Mt. between Gordon & Heckshersville? We can not guarantee you will see a spirit, but the fall foliage on the mountain should be spectacular in the coming weeks as hinted in the photo below.
