Pierogies have their roots in Eastern European cuisine. Homemade pierogies have always been a dish served at many tables for Christmas Eve Holy Suppers throughout the coal region. What was once a traditional ethnic side dish is right up there with mashed potatoes & french fries. Pierogies are popular staples at bingos, block parties, church festivals, & high school sporting events.
Mary Twardzik (Mrs. T) is pictured below working around her kitchen table with some "pierogie-making" friends in the late 1940s. In 1952 Mary's son, Ted, launched Mrs. T's Pierogies in the Capitol Food store in Shenandoah. The rest is history.
Mrs. T's now employs over 200 people & markets 14 varieties of tasty pockets of pasta & potatoes. 700 million Mrs. T's pierogies are now produced annually in the small coal region town of Shenandoah. The company introduced its "Black & Gold" pierogies this year. While many proclaim Shenandoah to be the "kielbasy capital" of Pa., you can also say Shenandoah is also the "pierogie capital" of the world.
