One year ago today, on Tuesday, August 26th, 2014, families were chased from their homes on the 200 Block of East Centre St. after a fire broke out in one of the homes.
When units arrived they found heavy smoke and fire conditions to the rear of the row homes. The fast
moving fire quickly spread from the area of 219 & 221 W. Centre St. to involve 217 through 231
E. Centre St.
The fire hit 4-alarms and brought in fire assistance from throughout Schuylkill as well as
Hazle Township, Luzerne County.
The fire was brought under control at approx. 9:00PM, but fire crews were still at the scene as late as 11:00PM.
1 firefighter was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital, Coaldale for heat exhaustion. Numerous
firefighters were also treated at the scene for heat related issues.
Approximately 20 people were displaced.
The Red Cross was also on hand to help any of the victims of the fire.
