The event is being coordinated by the Schuylkill County Sportsmen’s Advisory Board (SAB) to the Schuylkill County Commissioners and the Sweet Arrow Lake Park Board with assistance from the Schuylkill Conservation District.
The kick-off on April 23 is just the beginning as the event continues the entire year. This allows year round enjoyment to catch the grand prize tagged trout worth $1,000 and many other prizes. Ice fisherman will also have the opportunity to reel in a ‘winner’. In addition, if any of the many prizes are not redeemed by the following year’s event they will be distributed via a drawing from the previous year’s registrants. So, make sure you register by April 23 to be eligible for year round fun and prizes.
Over 1,300 people participated in last year’s event; the vast majority consisting of families.
Over $8,000 worth of trout will be stocked thanks to the Friends of Schuylkill Parks and Recreation, the Pine Grove Fish and Game and Swatara Co-op trout nurseries. Over 100 Lunker (18 plus inchers) trout will also be stocked. At this time there will be over $5,000 in prizes with tagged trout, crappies, one carp and one catfish worth a minimum of $25 each. Currently over twenty fish will have tags worth $100 each in gift certificates. Kids are in for a real treat this year as we have a few prizes for them to choose from. Fleer Sports memorabilia, fishing rods or lures will be available to the first 200 kids age 5-12 years.
The registration fee prior to April 1st to enter is $15 an individual or $30 per family, which will include one $5 individual and one $10 family food voucher. After April 1 and the day of the event the fee will increase $5 and $10 respectively. The heaviest carp (weighed between 1 and 1:30pm) caught April 23 will receive $50 cash to be awarded near the Clubhouse at 2pm.
In addition to the family fishing event, canoe and kayaks will be available for rent. Also, a newly completed 18 hole disk golf course is available free. There are many trails and a playground to enjoy with your family. So even if you don’t fish, come out for breakfast or lunch, and enjoy other activities. An awesome Chinese auction also awaits anyone wishing to partake at the clubhouse; no need to be present to win.
