Man Struck While Riding Bicycle
On Wednesday May 17, 2017 around 3:15am, Pottsville Bureau of Police officers were dispatched to the intersection of Claude A Lord Blvd (SR61) and East Norwegian Street for a report of a motor vehicle accident.
Upon arrival, Officers found Matthew Madeira, 31, of Mahanoy City, laying in the roadway bleeding from the head. Madeira received medical care at the scene by Pottsville EMS and was then transported by EMS from the scene for further treatment at a medical facility.
The investigation revealed that Madeira had been operating a BMX style bicycle eastbound on the south side of the 100 block of E. Norwegian Street when he disregarded a steady red traffic signal facing his direction of traffic and attempted to cross Claude A Lord Blvd. Madeira then traveled into the path of a 2012 Kia Forte operated by a 25 year old man from Coal Township, Northumberland County, that had been traveling northbound on SR61 and had a steady green signal. The impact caused Madeira to be thrown from the bicycle into the roadway and caused minor damage to the Kia, including a broken windshield. At the time of the accident, Madeira was wearing dark in color clothing and his bicycle failed to display the required lighting for operation during darkness.
The Kia was towed from the scene due to the window damage.
Two independent witnesses were located and interviewed, and provided investigators with complete information about the accident and causation factors.
The investigation is also pending the receipt of surveillance footage from A-Plus. Upon receipt of this data and medical records, appropriate charges will be filed by Ptlm. Michael Messner.
