Police Identify Woman Who Drove Vehicle Into Schuylkill County Sheriff's House

Ashland Police have released the name of the woman that crashed her vehicle into the home of the Schuylkill County Sheriff earlier this week.

According to Ashland Police, Melanie L. Rooney, of Mount Carmel, was the driver of a 2001 ford explorer that struck a home at 23rd & Walnut streets in Ashland Monday night around 9:45pm.

According to witnesses, Rooney was driving at a high rate of speed west on Walnut Street and drove thru several stop signs including one at 23rd and Walnut Streets.

Police say she then struck a stop sign on the opposite side of the roadway, in the 2300 block of Walnut Street, jumped a curb and continued traveling across a lawn before striking the residence of Schuylkill County Sheriff Joseph Groody.

Rooney then exited the vehicle and fled on foot before being apprehended in the area of Gitman Shirt parking lot.

Rooney was transported to Lehigh Valley South Hospital by Ashland EMS and treated for injuries to her face.

Ashland Police say numerous charges are pending against Rooney as a result of the accident.

No one inside the residence was injured and police say the residence sustained both interior and exterior damage from the impact.
