On Wednesday evening, the North Schuylkill School District held their January Board of School Directors Public Meeting, including the appointment of a new solicitor.
The meeting was held January 17, 2018 at 7:00pm with all members in attendance except for Vice President Roy Green. Member Suzanne O'Neill attending via phone.
The meeting began with recognition of guests which included the press in attendance, Skook News Editor Justin Reed and the Republican Herald's John E. Usalis.
The minutes from previous meetings were approved.
Board Member Mary Anne Woodward motioned to approve the financial reports and check registers from November 2017 and December 2017. The motion was approved.
Included in the motion was a request to approve the Act 1 resolution, which established the State-assigned Act 1 index of 3.5% for the North Schuylkill School District as a maximum tax rate increase for 2018-2019. A motion was also approved a request to approve a compromise assessment reduction down to $165,000 for parcel #61-02-0018.00.
Board Member Glenn Weist requested approval of the use of school facilities for January 2018 through April 2018. All were approved.
Board Member Tom Fletcher motioned a request to appoint Anthony Urban Law Offices, P.C. as solicitor at a retainer of $250.00 per month on all other charges as outlined in a previous proposal letter dated December 21, 2017, effective January 1st, 2018. The motion was approved.
A motion was requested to approve Jacqueline O'Prey as a mentor teacher, at a rate of $500.00 per inductee for the 2017-2018 school year. The motion was approved.
A motion was requested to approve, upon receipt of all appropriate documentation, the employment of Dennise Wise as a Part-Time Custodian at a rate of $9.50 per hour, pending a written satisfactory evaluation after a 6-day probationary period, retroactive to December 7, 2017. The motion was approved.
A motion was requested to accept the resignation of a Michelle Place, a part-time aide, effective December 22, 2017. The motion was approved.
A motion was requested to approve, upon receipt of all appropriate documentation, the employment of Carla Harper as a part-time aide at a rate of $9.75 per hour, pending a written satisfactory evaluation after a 60-day probationary period, retroactive to January 2, 2018. The motion was approved.
A motion was requested to approve the termination of Kimberly Huben, a part-time cafeteria worker, effective January 12, 2018. The motion was approved.
A motion was requested to accept the resignation of Jill Bowman, a part-time special education aide, effective January 16, 2018. The motion was approved.
Board Member Janine Simms motioned a request to approve the 2017-2018 School Calendar revisions necessitated by a weather cancellation on January 5, 2018. The motion was approved.
A motion was requested to approve a letter of Linkage/Agreement between the ReDCo Group Behavioral Health Services and the North Schuylkill School District effective January 2018. The motion was approved.
A motion was requested to approve a field trip request to Mutter Museum, Philadelphia, PA from the Secondary Science Teachers, for students enrolled in Human Physiology or Genetics/Biotechnology in March 2018. The motion was approved.
Board Member Douglas Gressens motioned a request to approve, upon receipt of all appropriate documentation, Patricia Walsh as a Volunteer Choreographer for the Theatre Arts Program for the 2017-2018 School Year. The motion was approved.
A motion was requested to approve, an Administrative Internship for Tanner Cain Martin with the Athletic Department for the 2017-2018 School Year. The motion was approved.
A motion was requested to approve, upon receipt of all appropriate documentation, Sammi (Phillips) Hart, as Head Diving Coach for the 2017-2018 Winter Season at a Salary of $2,000. The motion was approved.
A motion was requested to accept the resignation of Sean Smith as the NS News and Media Group Advisory, effective at the end of the 2017-2018 school year. The motion was approved.
Board Member Ed Balkiewicz motioned a request to approve the Committee Assignments for 2018. The motion was approved.
A motion was requested to approve the second reading of the revised Non-School Organizations/Groups/Individuals police. The motion was approved.
A motion was requested to approve the first reading of the Comparability of Services, District-Wide Title I Parental Involvement, and revised head lice polices. The motion was approved.
A motion was also requested to approve the updated Complaint Process for Participation of Nonpublic and Private School Children effective beginning with the 2017-2018 school year.
No old business or new business was discussed
Lastly, a motion was requested to approve the appointment of Robert Amos as the North Schuylkill School District's representative to the Schuylkill County Land Bank Board for a three-year term beginning January 1, 2018.
Future meetings were announced for Committee Meetings on February 14, 2018 at 7:00pm. The Board of School Directors Committees will meet as a whole on February 21, 2018 at 6:30pm with a regular meeting scheduled at 7:00pm.
