After the rain that fell during the spring, summer, and fall of 2018, the Spartan's field had become unsafe for their all-purpose stadium.
The district was left with the task to replace the grass on the field with a price tag of over $200,000 or look at options of installing turf, which has been discussed for over a decade.
In December 2018, the North Schuylkill School Board approved a $1,119,337.92 project with FieldTurf USA Inc. to replace the current field with a synthetic turf field.
At the end of the school year, in June, ground was broken on the project.
Through the past two months, crews have been working on digging out the old field and preparing the ground for the turf installation.
On Wednesday, the first rolls of the new turf were installed.
According to crews at the field, 15 rolls of turf were installed Wednesday and a total of 46 rolls will be installed when the project completes.
The project is reported to be on schedule and the field will be ready for the Spartan's first game at home in Week 2 of the season against Shamokin.
