State Police Charge Driver in Fatal Thanksgiving Morning Crash with Homicide


State Police in Schuylkill County have charged the driving in a Thanksgiving morning crash with homicide.


According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville, the crash occurred just after 6:00am in the northbound lanes of Interstate 81 near mile marker 139 in Kline Township.

At the time, police said two people were seriously injured when a 2015 Nissan Versa entered the median near mile marker 139 and rolled several times.

The Nissan came to a final rest on it's side in the median.

Both the driver and passenger were extricated by emergency personnel and were not identified.

On Saturday morning, the Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville provided an update.

Police say both the driver, Leon Charles, 49, of Mt. Rainer, MD, and the passenger, James Muse, 48, of Laurel, MD, were wearing their seatbelts.

On Friday, November 29, 2019, the passenger, James Muse died from his injuries at Cedar Crest.Hospital in Allentown.


On Wedneday, December 4th, 2019, the Pennsylvania State Police say Charles was release from Cedar Crest Hospital, Allentown, on Tuesday, December 3rd, 2019.

Charles was taken into custody on a charges of Homicide by Vehicle while under the influence, aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence, driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance, driving with a revoked or suspended license, reckless driving, and other charges.

Charles was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Plachko and locked up in Schuylkill County Prison on $500,000 cash bail.
