Big news for Pottsville was released at the annual Brewer’s of Pennsylvania meeting in Pittsburgh this past weekend.
Bobby Weaver announced that he and his wife will be opening Black Rock Brewing Company in downtown Pottsville by the end of 2020. 325 South Centre Street is set to be the location of this new venture. The “old YWCA” building will be restored under fresh ownership, and re-open as a microbrewery, winery, and event space. Black Rock Brewing will feature its own craft brews, a selection of the much loved, classic Yuengling line, mixed cocktails made exclusively with Pennsylvania spirits, and a pop-up wine bar staffed and stocked by Spring Gate Vineyard and Winery of Harrisburg. SpringGate Winery will be a partner in this venture, expressing their excitement regarding their connection tothis project on social media this weekend, “We look forward to engaging in the Pottsville community, as a portion of the SpringGate lineage traces back to a long mining heritage.” Find out more about SpringGate athttp://www.springgatevineyard.com/.
A menu of pub-inspired snacks and rotating food trucks outside will be part of Black Rock Brewing’s regular offerings. The owners also have plans to makeover the two grassy areas on either side of the building to provide outdoorseating for guests during the warmer months. Black Rock will bring together multiple facets of heavily traveled tourist destinations by incorporating a diverse range of eating and drinking options, as well as events.
Bobby Weaver, owner and CEO of Black Rock Brewing, shared his perspective on the new business; “The vision for this project ultimately extends beyond starting Black Rock Brewing. It’s really about highlighting the grit and the determination of the people who built this community. The coal region was created by dedicated workers and business owners, who found valuable parts of Schuylkill County and made something great with them. The Black Rock Brewing project is about renovating the building and creating a really great space, yeah, but at the end of the day, it’s about revitalization.”
325 Centre Street was formerly owned and operated by the YWCA. This cornerstone building is one of the first architecturally stunning sights visitors see when entering the South side of Pottsville. The YWCA held an important role in the community for years as they hosted events and made much needed resources readily available to the people of Schuylkill County. “The nostalgia associated with this building is really high. Ever since we started talking about the “old YWCA”, it’s been rare to come in contact with someone from Pottsville who doesn’t have some kind of personal connection to it - most popularly, memories of gymnastics classes in one of the massive upstairs rooms”, explained owner Abby Weaver, who will oversee marketing and events for the space. “We’d love to hold onto this sense of connection to the community and integrate that feeling into Black Rock Brewing. Calling back to the YWCA by hosting workshops, classes, and events on a regular basis is something we’re hoping to make a common occurrence once we getup and running.”
An opening announcement date will be released by Summer of 2020.
