The Dutch Kitchen Cup Regatta was started two years ago when North Schuylkill CAD teacher Kelly Stone introduced the project where students used CAD software to plan, develop, and design cardboard boats.
During it's first year, two teams of students faced off right at North Schuylkill's Natatorium, first to see if their boats float, then to see whose was the fastest.
In 2020, with the event in it's third year, the project has now become more STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) focused and now includes the high school's mathematics classes as well.
This year, the event included 24 teams of boats that faced off in 9 heats prior to a final race.
The 24 teams were broken up between Kelly Stone's CAD Classes and Math Classes taught by Leah Briggs and Renata Blozousky.
Prior to Friday's races, students designed and built boats out of 4 rolls of duct tape and 4 large pieces of cardboard. Through the design process, students incorporated teaching from STEM.
"Students calculated the weight of people in the boat, the volume of their boat, how much water would be displaced, and other surface calculations. They also took measurements to create a scale drawing prior to building." said Briggs.
"It's fun to watch the kids have fun with the project, a lot of times I see kids put the designs in and I think, that's not going to work, but then they do!" said Stone.
The winner of this year's event was "Below Deck" from Mrs. Blozousky's class. Students on the winning team were Sierra Wishnefsky, Cassandra Teter, Savanna Magdeburg, Katie McCormick, Regan Campbell, and Chloe Briggs.
