Mahanoy City Woman Charged with Assault After Retail Theft Leads to Altercation with Police

A Mahanoy City woman was charged with assault after being caught stealing items from Rite Aid in the borough and getting into an altercation with police.

According to Mahanoy City Police Patrolman Thomas Rentschler, on Saturday, around 8:20pm, he received a call from the Rite Aid on Centre Street, in regards to a retail theft in progress.

The employee told Rentschler that Victoria Anderson, 24, of Mahanoy City, was in the store and attempting to steal and conceal items.

As Rentschler arrived at the store, he met Anderson as she was leaving.  When they made eye contact, she attempted to run and flee.  As she ran across the parking lot, the items she took from the store began to fall to the ground.

A short foot pursuit took place where Anderson was eventually taken to the ground.

As Officer Rentschler attempted to take Anderson into custody, she began to fight with him, ignoring commands to stop, and even striking him in the face.

After a struggle, Rentschler drew his taser, and Anderson was taken into custody.

Store employees identified a necklace that she stole, which was valued at $11.99.

Anderson was taken to the borough's police station where she admitted to using heroin an hour before the incident, and admitted that the earrings and socks she was wearing were also stolen.

Anderson also told Rentschler that she stole the items because she believed she had a warrant for missing court, so she figured she wanted to look good in jail.

Anderson was charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest, and retail theft.  After being arraigned by Magisterial District Judge James Ferrier and locked up in Schuylkill County Prison unable to posted $15,000 straight cash bail.
