One Injured After Driver Fails to Stop at Red Light in Deer Lake

One person was injured Tuesday after a driver failed to stop at a red light on Route 895.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Schuylkill Haven, the crash occurred on Tuesday, June 23rd, 2020 around 6:15pm at the intersection of Route 61 and Route 895 in the borough of Deer Lake.

Police say Michael Smith, 29, of Orwigsburg was travelling east on Route 895 and had a steady red light at the intersection with Route 61.  Mitchel Rice, 23, of Orwigsburg was traveling north on Route 61 and had a steady green light.

For unknown reasons, Smith drove through the red light and struck Rice.

Rice was not injured but Smith was taken to an area hospital via Pottsville/Schuylkill Haven EMS for unknown injuries.

Assisting police at the scene were the Deer Lake / West Brunswick Township Fire Company along with the Pottsville / Schuylkill Haven EMS.
