Minersville Man Dies Over the Weekend in Berks County Quarry

A man from Minersville was identified by the coroners office over the weekend to have died in a quarry in Muhlenberg Township, Berks County north of Reading.

According to reports, on Friday morning, a suspect was being sought for attempting to shoplift at a Target store in the township.  The suspect had fled and made his way into a nearby quarry where he fell into the freezing cold water.

Dive teams were called and searched for the suspect through Friday until the evening, then resume a search Saturday morning when the body of the man was pulled from the water.

The Berks County Coroners identified the man as Joshua Fontanez-Rodriguez, 23, of Minersville. Fontanez-Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:30pm, Saturday by Deputy Coroner Jason Kantner.

An autopsy was scheduled for Monday morning at Reading Hospital with Dr. Neil Hoffman, MD, Pathologist.

Multiple dives teams responded to the incident including the team from the Schuylkill Hose Company in Schuylkill Haven.
