Downed Stop Sign Led to Rollover Crash in Middleport

One person was transported after a crash in Middleport on Thursday.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville, the crash occurred on Thursday, February 25th, 2021 just before 12:00pm at the intersection of Washington Street and Route 209 in Middleport.

Troopers say the crash occurred as Brian Jones, 20, of Lansford approached the intersection on Washington Street that was supposed to have a stop sign.  Due to the recent snow storm, the stop sign was knocked over and laying on the ground.

As Jones approached, he continued into the intersection not stopping and struck Lisa Shafer, 41, of Tamaqua, who was travelling on Route 209.

Jones' Jeep Liberty struck the driver's side of Shafer's Ford Escape causing the Escape to roll several times before coming to a rest in a snow bank right side up.

Shafer was reported to have suffered minor injuries in the crash and was transported to an area hospital.  Jones and a passenger in the vehicle with Shafer were not injured.

Assisting police at the scene were fire departments from Mary D, Kaska, and Tuscarora.
