Pottsville Fire Department and American Red Cross to Install Free Smoke Alarms Next Week

The Pottsville Fire Department and American Red Cross will be installing free smoke detectors in city homes next week as part of the Sound the Alarm Campaign.

On Monday, April 26, 2021, volunteer members of the Pottsville Fire Department will be installing free smoke detectors, starting at 5:30pm.

The program is a coordinated effort between city firefighters and the American Red Cross.

According to Pottsville Fire Chief Jim Misstishen, just last week, smoke alarms saved the lives of two people when a fire broke out in a home in the 600 Block of Harrison Street. The alarms woke them in enough that the two were able to escape the home from an upstairs window and wait on a roof until firefighters arrived.

In order to receive the free smoke detectors, you must be willing to allow a volunteer firefighter  into your home as they are required to do the actual installation. The firefighters will be following CDC guidelines for COVID-19 and will be wearing face masks.

Installations will be completed for pre-registered residents only.

Pottsville joins Shenandoah and Ashland who participated in the program this month.

Each home that is registered will also receive a free carbon monoxide detector courtesy of Mountain View Fire and Water Damage Restoration.

Anyone who is interested in having smoke alarms installed, should call Chief Misstishin at (570) 622-1234 Ext. 1335.  Someone will call you later this week to confirm your registration.
