Alvernia University, based in Reading, has confirmed that the school will be purchasing the former Giant Grocery Store property in Pottsville.
A few weeks ago, the Republican Herald interviewed Alvernia University's President John Loyack, who announced that the school would be moving out of their location in the Cressona Mall and into a new location in Pottsville. The new location was not made available at that time.
On Monday, the University confirmed in a statement to Skook News that the new location would be the former Giant Grocery Store property on Progress Avenue. The property was vacated in July of 2020.
The announcement of the purchase has many business leaders excited, including Savas Logothetides, Owner and Operator of the Wheel Restaurant and Executive Director of Pottsville Area Development Corporation.
"This is another great partnership that will influence positive trajectory in the City of Pottsville. It enhances livability, business, and education with a long term commitment from a reputable university." Logothetides commented Monday morning.
