Representatives from two volunteer fire-rescue companies that serve Pottsville and Mount Carbon Borough and part of North Manheim Township jointly announced on Thursday that they are starting a new chapter in their history.
The merger with American Hose Company No. 2 was formed to improve public safety services and create a stronger volunteer fire-rescue service to serve these municipalities and surrounding communities.
Mayor James T. Muldowney, City of Pottsville said "When this group of dedicated public servants looked at all the options available to improve the volunteer fire-rescue service from the community’s perspective, it was decided that a merger of American Hose Company # 2 and Mount Carbon fire companies was the best path forward for the residents, businesses, and visitors to the area."
Fire Chief James Misstishin, City of Pottsville said this merger needed to happen for both companies to combine the resources and volunteers to serve the City of Pottsville and Mt. Carbon Borough, surrounding Municipalities and Townships.
Mike Miller, a life member and President of the Mount Carbon Fire Company agreed that there were several reasons to complete the merger. "We see how many volunteer Fire-Rescue and EMS organizations are struggling today across Pennsylvania and the country trying to maintain manpower, be fiscally responsible and provide top-notch service. Instead of waiting until both organizations were struggling, the merger allows us to begin the next chapter in the history of these two fire companies stronger than ever before.” he stated. Joseph Moore, Fire Chief of Mount Carbon agreed, “Being proactive will help us sustain the volunteer fire-rescue service for many more years.”
“Both American Hose Company No. 2 and Mount Carbon Fire Company have proud traditions and history. It is important to remember where we came from, acknowledge where we are today and recognize where we need to get to in the future,” said John Fox, President of American Hose Company No. 2.
With the merger American Hose Company No. 2 will have approximately 30 active volunteer members operating out of two fire stations, one in the City of Pottsville and one in Mount Carbon Borough, respond to over 900 calls for service a year and will protect the same coverage areas focusing on providing service to the City of Pottsville, Mount Carbon Borough, parts of North Manheim Townships and surrounding communities.
