A rivalry that goes back decades met on the gridiron on Friday night for Week 1 of the high school football season. A county-line is all that separates the North Schuylkill Spartans and the Mount Carmel Tornadoes.
With the combining of the Schuylkill and Colonial Leagues for football, that shifted the annual meeting of these two teams to earlier in the season.
Due to storms pushing through at the time of kickoff Friday, players would have to sit through two half-hour delays within the first half, leaving the game deadlocked at 7 at half time.
The Tornadoes would start off the second half with the ball but the drive would stall and the Spartans took advantage and scored quickly.
North Schuylkill would pull ahead 20-7 before Mount Carmel would score their final score of the game make it 20-14 just before the end of the 3rd.
In the 4th, it was all North Schuylkill scoring twice more to end the game, 33-14.
North Schuylkill's quarterback Jake Hall would score twice on touchdown passes to Joey Flail and Carl Brown, and one quarterback sneak. Josh Chowansky would score once on a 50 yard touchdown pass.
Kicker Gavin Mentzer would go 3 for 4 in extra point.
Next week, the Spartans played Blue Mountain at home.
