The Pennsylvania State Police have released some details on the Interstate 81 crash in Schuylkill County on Monday.
According to the Frackville Barracks, the crash occurred around 10:36am in the northbound lanes of Interstate 81 at mile marker 116 in Foster Township during an active snow squall. An estimated 50 to 60 vehicles were involved in the crash including passenger vehicles, tractor trailers, motorhomes, and even a State Police Cruiser.
A total of 24 people were injured in the crash and transported to four different hospitals.
Those injured that were able to self extricate themselves from their vehicles were taken by Schuylkill Transportation Services buses to Wegman's Distribution Center where they were triaged.
If they did not need medical attention, they were taken to a reunification center at the Goodwill Fire Company in Minersville.
As of 8:30pm, Interstate 81 northbound remained closed as the scene was investigated and vehicles were still being cleared. The Interstate is expected to be closed for another 6 to 8 hours at least.
At the scene, the PSP Forensics Services Cars Unit & MCSAP units are investigating.
The investigation is still very active according to the release.
There are reports of multiple fatalities in the crash but their identities and the number of fatalities has not been provided as of late Monday.
