While high speed internet has improved greatly over the past couple years, there are parts of Schuylkill County that still have terrible or no broadband internet access.
According to a release from the legislators, new funding to support the construction of high-speed broadband infrastructure was awarded to projects in Cass Township and Reilly Township near Minersville.
“High-speed internet is no longer a luxury – it’s a necessity,” said Argall. “This new funding will support a better education for our children and make local businesses even more competitive. I’m thankful Cass Township and Reilly Township received this highly competitive funding.”
“It is crucial we provide high-speed internet service to residents as more people work and learn remotely,” said Twardzik, “This funding will begin the construction of wired infrastructure to necessarily serve the unserved areas of these townships and improve the customer experience.”
Schuylkill County Commissioner Barron “Boots” Hetherington stated that he was proud and excited for both townships being proactive and taking the lead to get services for their residents.
In total, over $1.7 million was awarded to Comcast Cable Communications, LLC to assist with the broadband expansion projects in the two townships. Ultimately, these projects will provide high speed internet to 1,000 residences and 70 businesses that are currently unserved in the two communities.
This funding was distributed through the Unserved High-Speed Broadband Funding Program, which was created last year after the General Assembly unanimously voted to create the Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority. Both aim to increase the deployment of broadband across Pennsylvania to ensure that more people have access to high-speed internet.
