Five Families Being Assisted by American Red Cross After Fire in Pottsville

Five families are being assisted after an early morning fire in Pottsville.

Around 5:45am, Thursday, emergency personnel were dispatched to 639 North Second Street for an apartment building fire.

As fire personnel responded, heavy smoke was visible.  A working fire was called in and was quickly upgraded to a 2nd alarm.

The five families that were living in the apartment building all escaped uninjured and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.  Patty Daley, Disaster Captain of the American Red Cross Tri-County Chapter, said that 13 people total are being assisted.

It took firefighters a little more than an hour to be the fire under control but not before severely damaging the building.  The fire was contained to the single structure.

An investigation by the Pottsville Fire Department ruled the cause of the fire as accidental.
