Born in Ashland, he was a son of the late Vincent and Marion Scanlan O’Hearn. In addition to his parent, he was preceded in death by his brothers: Edward and Richard O’Hearn; his sisters: Marianna O’Hearn and Susan Bovidge; his sisters-in-law: Lee and Pat O’Hearn.
Gene graduated from the former Ashland High School in 1962. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Army receiving the rank of Buck Sergeant during his two year tenure during the Vietnam War. Gene worked as a compound specialist for Zapata Industries in Frackville until the closure of the plant. He then went on to work as a crane operator for the Department of Defense in New Cumberland until his retirement in 2006.
Gene was an avid Notre Dame fan having traveled out to South Bend frequently to attend football games. He was a member of the Schuylkill County Notre Dame Club, the American Legion Post 434 and the American Hose Co., both of Ashland; the Girard Hunting Club and the AOH Jack Kehoe Division 1, Girardville. He was a lifelong member of the former St. Joseph's, now St. Charles Borromeo Church, Ashland. In his earlier years, Gene enjoyed playing softball for the Hibernian House and the Ashland Eagles.
Gene was a loving husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed spending his time with his family and never missing a grandchild’s music or sporting event. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
Gene is survived by his wife of 33 years, Sara O’Hearn, Ashland; his son, Mark O’Hearn and his wife LeeAnne, Ashland; his step sons: Steve McGrath and his wife Jen, Gordon, Scott McGrath and his wife Melanie of Carlisle; his brothers: Vince O’Hearn, Lancaster and Jim O’Hearn and his wife Nancy of Texas; his loving grandchildren: Mark O’Hearn, Michael, Tyler, Jonas, and Libby McGrath; sister-in-law, Carolyn Lucas and her husband Tom, Cogan Station; brothers-in-law, Dick Adams and his wife Mary, Renovo and JR Bovidge; several nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 13th from Saint Charles Borromeo Church, Ashland with Rev. Giuseppe Esposito, pastor, as the celebrant. Friends are invited to his visitation at the church on Saturday morning from 9 a.m. until the time of mass. Interment with military honors will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Fountain Springs.

Joseph N Sabol, 83, of the Vulcan, PA, died Wednesday, July 27th, at home.
Joseph was born in Vulcan, Mahanoy City, PA on March 8, 1939, a son of the late Elizabeth (Smulligan) and Joseph Sabol.
He graduated from Mahanoy Township High School and retired as a Heavy equipment Operator at Karel Construction Ashland.
He was husband of the late Rose (Bulchie) Sabol.
Joseph is survived by a daughter, Rita, wife of Steve Shalamanda, of Ashland; a sister, Elizabeth Case, of California, a grandson Stephen Shalamanda. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousin, nieces, and nephews.
He is preceded in death by a daughter Sheryl Sabol.
A Funeral Service will be held at the Louis D. Truskowsky Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., Mahanoy City, PA, at 11 am on Monday, August 1st, with Father Kevin Gallagher officiating.
Friends and family may call Monday 10 to 11 am at the Funeral Home.
Interment will follow in the Assumption BVM Cemetery Mahanoy City, PA.

Jill Abrams, 75, Mahanoy Plane, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Atmore, Alabama, she was a daughter of the late Aaron and Annie Stein Rackard.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her companion of 50 years, Robert Hank; her brothers: Aaron Rackard Jr. and Jackie Rackard; her sisters: Gail Ruberton and Billy Jo Morhauser.
Jill is survived by her daughters: Sherri Rooney and her husband Stephen, Ashland; Terry Clemson and her husband David, Tamaqua; Shannon Butler and her companion Jesus Martinez, Mahanoy Plane; her son, Arthur Abrams Jr. and his wife Amy, Florida; her brother, Robert Rackard, Georgia; her sisters: Joann Welch, New Jersey and Johnnie Ruth Chappine, New Jersey; her seven loving grandchildren: Jeremy, Jess, Corrine, Kevin, Shawn, Shane and Seth; her five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
