Rita B. Foley, 100, of Pottsville, passed away on July 8th, in her residence surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Pottsville, on February 16, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Harry A. and Kathryn (Cantwell) Bartholomew.

She was a graduate of Pottsville High School and a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Pottsville.

Rita was employed by the Pottsville School District for 20 + years, retiring in 1992.

In addition to her parents, Rita was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Foley, in 1953; a daughter, Kathleen Foley Fedor; sisters: Theresa Sencak, widow of John ; Janet Whitaker., widow of Charles ; and Kathryn Bartholomew; and brothers: George, Charles, Harold, Paul, James, and Carl.

Rita is survived by a daughter, Ellen J. Foley, of Pottsville; grandchildren: Jason and Jared; a sister, Frances C. Lorenz, widow of Charles, of Pottsville; many nieces and nephews; and grand nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 13th, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, 319 Mahantongo St., Pottsville, with Father Phil Rodgers officiating. A viewing will be held in the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.

Interment will follow in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery, Pottsville.

Wilbur E. "Wibbs" Brokenshire, age 95, of Mahanoy City and most recently a resident of Providence Place, passed away Friday at Lehigh Valley Hospital Schuylkill East Norwegian Street in Pottsville. Born in Mahanoy City he was a son of the late George and Elva (Tregea) Brokenshire Sr.. He was a 1944 graduate of Mahanoy City High School. He was a United States Army Veteran of W.W.II . He was a corporal in the Service Battery 7th Field Artillery Battalion and was a parts man. His unit was one of the first of the groups to occupy Germany.

Upon completion his tour of duty he returned home to work in the local mines to help in supporting his family. He then went on to work as a carrier for the Mahanoy City Post Office, a job he enjoyed tremendously. Always with a smile, he knew everyone on his route and everyone knew him. He retired after 24 year of service. He was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church and the Humane Fire Company in Mahanoy City. He loved watching the Phillies and especially the Eagles. He was an avid reader and studied his Bible daily without fail. He enjoyed all dogs, especially Beagles. 

He was preceded in death by brothers Walter, Jerry, George, John, Allen and Ralph and a sister Elva Mae. 

He is survived by one brother James of Frackville, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews. 

Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral on Thursday morning at 11 AM from the First United Methodist Church in Mahanoy City. Interment with military honors will follow in the German Protestant Cemetery in Mahanoy Township. Friends may call at the church on Thursday morning beginning at 9:30 AM. Contributions in his name to the First United Methodist Church, 400 E. Mahanoy Ave., Mahanoy City, PA 17948 would be appreciated by the family.

Jeffrey Lynn Riegel
, age 57, of St. Clair, PA passed away after almost four year battle of cancer on Sunday, July 10th, 2022 at his home.

Born in Pottsville, PA on April 5, 1965, he was the son of the late Wilmer P. and Beverly (Imschweiler) Riegel.

Jeff was a graduate of Pottsville Area High School, Class of 1985. He was first employed at Precision Air for over 20 years, then at Fox Trucking, and his latest employer was Pitt-Ohio Express in Hazleton as a truck driver for 20 years.

Jeff was a lifetime member of the East End Fire Company and the Citizen's Fire Company in Palo Alto and the East Norwegian Township Fire Company in Saint Clair, and also served as Fire Police in Palo Alto. Jeff enjoyed going to Big Diamond Racetrack on a Friday night, going to Pottsville High School football games, NASCAR racing, riding his quad, hunting, fishing, hiking, spending time at his cousin Ray's garage, and being with and spending time with his friends, family, and grandchildren.

Jeff is survived by his wife of 9 years, Phyllis M. (Hornberger) Riegel, St. Clair; son Jeffrey L. Riegel Jr. and his companion Taylor Korell, Schuylkill Haven; two daughters: Stacey Sattazahn and her husband Josh, Orwigsburg; and Brittany Riegel, Pottsville; five grandchildren: Kylie, Quinton, Allanni, Aleah, and Aubrey; brother David Riegel and his companion Diane Thorn; three sisters: Cheryl, Alicia, Candy; three step-sons: Justin R. Deane and his wife Dannielle, Ringtown; Darren L. Miller Jr. and his companion Katie Smith, Ashland; and Nicholas J. Miller and his wife Kayla, Ashland; step-mother Margaret Fredrick Riegel; three step-brothers: Randy, Ronald, and Puggy Fredrick; and aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A Religious Service will be held at the Robert A. Evans Jr. Funeral Home, Port Carbon at 11AM on Thursday, July 14th, with Pastor Jack Murray officiating.

Relatives and Friends are invited to a viewing on Wednesday evening from 6-8PM and Thursday morning from 9-11AM at the Funeral Home.

Interment will be held in the Queen of the Universe Cemetery Pottsville, PA.

Theresa D. Kessler, 82, of Locustdale, passed away Monday, July 11, 2022, at the Geisinger Shamokin Community Hospital, Coal Township.

Theresa M. Roth
, 95, of Pottsville, passed away on Sunday at her home.

Born in Frackville on July 15, 1926, she was a daughter of the late William and Gertrude (nee Holcenthaler) McCafferty. She was a 1945 graduate of Pottsville Catholic High School, and worked in the local garment industry.

She was a member of the former Mary Queen of Peace Church, Pottsville, followed by the former St. Stephen Church, Port Carbon, and a current member of St. Clare of Assisi Church, Saint Clair. She was also a member of the ILGWU, the former Mary Queen of Peace Ladies’ Guild, and past president of the Good Will Fire Company No. 4 Auxiliary, Pottsville.

Preceding her in death were her husband of 52 years, Deacon Cyril Roth, in 1999; a son, Cyril Roth, Jr., in infancy; her sister, Kathleen Hughes; a grandson, Neil Florick.

Theresa is survived by five remaining children, Barbara A. Shay (spouse, Edward), Dover, Delaware, Marie T. Dusel (spouse, Robert), Pottsville, Elizabeth J. Donetti (spouse, James), Orwigsburg, Mary Margaret Florick (spouse, Edward), Pottsville, and Robert M. Roth (spouse, Janine), Port Carbon; 13 remaining grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

The family will accept visitors at St. Clare of Assisi R.C. Church, 250 East Hancock Street, Saint Clair on Thursday from 10:00 A.M. to 10:45 A.M. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. Committal will be on Monday at 9:30 A.M. in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, East Hanover Township. Dutcavich Funeral Home has charge.

Joan Marie Carroll, 93, of West Chester, formerly of Minersville, passed away on Sunday at peacefully at St. Martha Manor, Downingtown.

Born on April 30, 1929 in Pottsville, she was the daughter of the late Joseph B. and Margaret (nee Quirk) Brennan. She was a 1947 graduate of Pottsville Catholic High School. She worked in the local garment industry.

She was a member of the former St. Vincent de Paul Church before moving to West Chester to reside with her daughter. She had been active in the Women’s Sodality of the former Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church; and had been a member of the Minersville Civic Club.

Joan Marie enjoyed Broadway musicals and bus trips to historical landmarks and shrines. She loved to play word search puzzles and baking.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin J. Carroll, in 2006; her sister, Kathleen Brennan, in infancy, her brother, Edward Brennan, in 2016; her nephew, Edward Brennan, Jr., in 2007.

She is survived by three children, Marlain Carroll, West Chester, Martin Carroll (spouse, Jeri), Lake Wynonah, and Patrick Carroll (spouse, April), Ocean View, Delaware; five grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; a niece, Sherrill Brennan.

The family will accept visitors at Dutcavich Funeral Home, 200 Sunbury Street, Minersville, on Friday from 8:00 A.M. to 9:15 A.M when procession will form. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. in Holy Family Parish, 539 Sunbury Street, Minersville. Committal will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Pottsville. The family prefers donations to Holy Family Parish, 538 Sunbury Street, Minersville. Dutcavich Funeral Home has charge.
