The Pennsylvania State Police released the results of an investigation into a bus crash in Schuylkill County last year that injured dozens.
On September 19th, 2021, three Premiere #1 Limousine coaches were traveling together heading south on Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County. The buses were carrying adults and teens that were part of a youth church group from the Lancaster area.
Around 2:36pm near the off ramp of Interstate 81 southbound at the Hegins Exit in Frailey Township, one of the buses, carrying 30 passengers and being driven by Adam Wright, 37, of Lancaster veered off the highway.
The bus traveled off the right-side shoulder into the gore area of exit 112, truck the exit sign and continued south on the grass area between the Interstate and exit ramp, then crossed over the exit ramp and on to the grass area on the west/right side of the exit ramp, continued straight crossing over Route 25 where it struck the center metal guiderail, then struck a dirt embankment and went airborne into trees, and came to a final rest after striking a large group of trees.
Upon impact with the trees, Wright was ejected from the motorcoach. He sustained serious bodily injury in the crash. The other occupants sustained serious bodily injuries and were transported to hospitals via personal cars, ambulances, and medivacs.
State Police spent several months investigating the cause of the crash and on Friday, July 22nd, 2022, stated that Wright appeared to have suffered a medical emergency at the time of the crash. Video from the bus showed Wright losing consciousness as the bus traveled off the roadway.
An examination of the bus showed no defects that would have caused or contributed to the crash.
The Schuylkill County District Attorney's Office reviewed the findings of the report, the video obtained of the driver, and medical records. Based on that information, no charges will be filed against Wright.
