Dustin's Adventureland, Schuylkill County's first inclusive playground, is officially open!
The playground in Minersville, was built by the non-profit with the same name that set out several years ago to build a park for kid's with special needs.
The group's initial plan was to hold an Easter Egg Hunt for children with special needs, but once their creative minds game together, the project began.
The non-profit raised over $500,000 through donations, grants, and fundraising, to build the park and worked with the borough of Minersville and Minersville Lions on the location.
The new park, located at the Minersville Recreation Complex at 200 Edgar Lewis St., is filled with fun for everyone of all ages.
There are slides, swings, and zip lines along with sensory panels a two story tower and a merry go round.
The floor/ground to park is made with a special rubber that if anyone falls, they won't get hurt.
After months of construction, a special ribbon cutting was held last Wednesday with the help of the Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce.
The event was attended by County dignitaries, business leaders, and everyone that had a hand in helping the project.
After some brief words, the ribbon was cut at by the board members and some kids eager to play.
Watch the video's below for the opening remarks as well as some words from special guest speaker James "JP" Powers.
The party wasn't over though once the ribbon was cut. This past weekend was filled with more family fun.
Friday night, a special movie night was held at the playground where the movie "Bad Guys" was played.
Saturday night, included bounce houses and music, that ended with fireworks!
What's next for Dustin's Adventureland? Well, prior to the ribbon cutting, President Jim Womer told those in attendance that they are working on building a Splash Pad next to the park. No details were provided, we were just told to stay tuned.
