Pottsville Area Middle School Student Charged with Assault and Found in Possession of Pocketknife

A Pottsville Area Middle School student was taken into custody after an incident on Tuesday.

According to Pottsville Chief of Police, John Morrow, on Tuesday, January 31st, 2023, at 12:12pm, members of the Pottsville Bureau of Police were dispatched to the Pottsville Middle School for a disorderly student.

While responding, dispatch stated the student fled the building in an attempt to flee the school grounds. Shortly after, the school resource officer caught him prior to police arrival.

Upon arrival, school staff reported that the student would not follow school staff instructions that led to the student acting out and eventually fleeing the building. It was also learned that during this incident, the 14-year-old juvenile shoved a female staff member causing her to fall to the ground as she tried to stop him from fleeing.

While police were investigating the assault, school staff subsequently searched the juvenile’s backpack, and found a folding pocketknife in it. The investigating officer viewed the security camera footage provided by the school district that corroborated the incident as described by school staff.

The 14-year-old juvenile was taken into custody and transported to Pottsville City Hall. The juvenile was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, and possession of a weapon on school property.

After completion of the juvenile allegation, the juvenile was then remanded to the custody of the Schuylkill County Juvenile Department.
