James M. Hughes, 94 of Shenandoah Heights passed away on Thursday, February 9, 2023 at Geisinger St. Luke’s Hospital, Orwigsburg.
Born in Shenandoah on July 8, 1928, he was a son of the late Edward and Frances (Zkosky) Hughes.
He was a 1945 graduate of the former West Mahanoy Township High School, Shenandoah Heights.
Mr. Hughes was a decorated World War II Army Veteran. He received the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupational Medal Japan.
James retired from the Steamfitters and Pipefitters Local 524, Scranton where he was a member for over fifty years.
He was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, Shenandoah, the former Annunciation BVM Church, the Shenandoah Heights Fire Company, the Greater Shenandoah Area Senior Citizens, and the Shenandoah Amvets Post. James was an avid fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles and attended many games throughout his life. He was also a fan of Penn State and Notre Dame. He enjoyed visiting local casinos and doing the daily cross word puzzles.
Preceding him in death in addition to his father and mother who was a Gold Star Mother were three brothers, Joseph, Edward and Bernard Hughes; four sisters, Catherine M. “Kitty” Donovan, Geraldine C. “Gerri” Flynn, Mary Mulroy and Frances Mack.
Surviving are his sister, Jean Dower of Ashland; nephew and caregivers, James E. Donovan and his wife Kathleen of Shenandoah Heights; additional nephews, nieces, cousins and their families.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at 10:00 am in Divine Mercy Church, 232 West Cherry Street, Shenandoah with Monsignor Ronald C. Bocian, Pastor as the celebrant. Interment with military honors will follow in Annunciation BVM Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights. A viewing will be held in Divine Mercy Church prior to the mass from 9:00 am until 10:00 am. Expressions of sympathy can be made to Divine Mercy Parish, 108 West Cherry Street, Shenandoah, PA 17976. Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, 132 South Jardin Street, Shenandoah is in care of the arrangements.
Patricia E. Leonard, 80, of Black Heath, passed away Friday morning at Schuylkill Medical Center -East, Pottsville.
Born in Philadelphia she was the daughter of the late Charles and Elizabeth Reynolds Loughran.
She was a graduate of Nativity BVM High School, Pottsville and a 1963 graduate of Sacred Heart Nursing School. She was a member of St. Michael’s Church of Holy Family Parish, Minersville. She was a registered nurse for 50 years having worked as an occupational nurse and at both of the Pottsville Hospitals. She was a member of the Northeast Pennsylvania Nurses Association, Wilkes-Barre.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Jon Leonard; a daughter Judith wife of John Rizzardi, Pine Grove; 2 sons, John and his wife Jessica, Forestville and Jeffrey, Danville; 6 grandchildren, Devon, Kristin and Danielle Shaak and Jade, Jewel and Jack.Leonard.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM Tuesday in St. Michael’s Church of Holy Family Parish, 539 Sunbury St. Minersville. Rev. Jason Stokes will officiate. Relatives and friends can call Tuesday morning from 8AM to 10AM at the Donald J. Butler Funeral Home, 328 Sunbury St., Minersville. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Hillside.
In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer remembrances in the form of contributions to either the Holy Family Memorial Fund or the St. Vincent De Paul Society, 538 Sunbury St, Minersville, Pa. 17954.

Carmela (Millie) Allegretta passed peacefully with her children around her.
Carmela was 96 years old.
She is preceded in death by her parents Patsy and Hortense Cetrulo. Her sister Delphine and her husband Daniel Scalera, Her brother Joe Cetrulo and her sister-in-law Jean Cetrulo. She is now reunited in death with her beloved husband Frank Allegretta.
Her children, Patti Galanti (Victor), Frank Allegretta (Gina) and Gary Allegretta will miss her beyond measure. She also leaves behind her beloved Granchildren- Vic, Nick, Jennifer and Noah, and 4 great grandchildren, Jack, Oliver, Leo and Ella.
Millie devoted her life to her family and was always there to help with anything they needed. There will be a service and visitation at the Oravitz Home for Funerals Inc, Shenandoah PA, on Tuesday, February 14th at 10 am followed by burial at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in NJ following the drive from PA to NJ. In lieu of flowers please send a donation to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or the ASPCA.
