Martin J. Carroll, Jr., age 69, of Lake Wynonah, Pennsylvania was welcomed into eternity by his Lord and Savior on Monday, February 27th following unexpected complications from a stroke.
Marty was an accomplished man, but he would want to be remembered most for his love and commitment to Jesus Christ. Marty resolved to follow Jesus in November 1973, and by God’s grace was faithful to his “First Love” until his last breath. In life, he radiated with this love. Ministry was never his profession, but it was his primary passion. He was a gifted and compassionate evangelist who delighted in hearing people’s stories and telling them about the God of the universe who loved and died for them.
Marty was born on March 14, 1953 to the late Martin J. Carroll, Sr. and the late Joan Marie (nee Brennan) Carroll. He will be profoundly missed by his high school sweetheart and beloved wife of 44 years, Geraldine "Jeri” (nee McAlonis) Carroll, with whom he was graced with three sons, Timothy (wife, Yoshah), Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania; Albert (wife, Tamara), Newark, Delaware; and Jeffrey, who died in infancy and greeted him in Heaven. Proverbs 17:6 says, “Children’s children are the crown of the aged” and Marty boasted eleven grandchildren! Kingsley, Seth, Eliana, Uriah, Liora, Timothy, Jr., Noah, Rosalie, Louisa, Malcolm, and Felicity were the glory of their grandfather. Marty also will be missed by his siblings, Marlain Carroll, West Chester, Pennsylvania and Patrick Carroll (wife, April), Ocean View, Delaware, and the many nieces and nephews whom he loved. He was a member of Christ Evangelical Free Church (CEFC) and enjoyed worshiping alongside and fellowshipping with his brothers and sisters in Christ. He loved hunting and fishing with his family and friends.
Marty was a hardworking man who did everything with excellence. He graduated from Nativity B.V.M. in 1971 and earned a B.S. degree in Criminal Justice from York College. In 1977, he graduated from the Municipal Police Training Course at the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, where he was awarded the High Scholastic Award, the American Legion Award, and the Top Gun Award. Marty served as a police officer for AMTRAK, Montgomery County, Maryland and Pottsville, Pennsylvania. Along with his brother, he co-owned Carroll’s Truck Accessories in Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania for two decades. Upon selling the family business, he worked at the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, retiring as a Unit Manager at SCI Mahanoy, where he took the opportunity to share the Gospel with many inmates. He also volunteered at Adult and Teen Challenge in Rehrersburg, Pennsylvania.
By the world’s standards, Marty Carroll lived a simple life. By heavenly standards, his life was exceptional. One of his favorite authors, C.S. Lewis, once said, “The death of a beloved is an amputation.” Those who loved Marty know this is true. In his passing, he leaves behind a gaping hole in our hearts and lives. With sorrow and anticipation, we look forward to the day when we will see him again — with God, like God, and together. Praise Jesus for this hope, an anchor for our soul.
The Carroll Family will accept visitors at Christ Evangelical Free Church (CEFC), 8477 Route 183, Bethel, on Saturday from Noon until a Celebration of Life service at 1:00 P.M. A Christian burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Pottsville. Dutcavich Funeral Home has charge.
