As night falls in Girardville, law enforcement and fire personnel remain at the scene where an explosive device was found on Wednesday.
Around 3:00pm, Wednesday, emergency personnel closed the unit block West Main Street in Girardville, after a suspected explosive device was found in an apartment.
The apartment building where the device was found was evacuated and residents who lived within a block radius were told to shelter in place.
Girardville Fire Chief Frank Zangari provided an update around 9:00pm, and confirmed an explosive device was found in an upstairs apartment. Zangari said that the device was found when a maintenance person for the building was preparing for an inspection.
Zangari said around 8:00pm, the device was detonated in the apartment by a bomb squad. After the detonation, fire personnel were checking the apartment and found a second device.
Law enforcement remain at the scene waiting for assistance from more personnel to assist with removal of the second device.
Zangari said the apartment was currently vacant and being prepared for a new tenant. He did not have any information on any suspected past residents.
Zangari also said all the proper precautions were being taken and there was no danger to the public.
Residents are asked to avoid West Main Street as the road is expected to be closed into the early morning hours.
The scene is still very active, and we will provide updates as more information becomes available.
