Last week, 5th and 6th graders from North Schuylkill Elementary assisted veterans with preparing for Memorial and learned a little along the way.
On Thursday, veterans from the Ashland VFW and American Legion met with students to talk about Memorial Day.
Students both grades listened to a presentation that included the significance of the holiday and also learned about flag placement on graves of Veterans.
After the presentation, student went to cemeteries in Ashland and Fountain Springs to assist the Veterans with replacing flags on the graves.
During a special moment during the presentation, the North Schuylkill School District presented Larry Hellwig with his high school diploma.
In 1968, Hellwig was unable to finish high school in Ashland due to be drafted. As a surprise, North Schuylkill School Board President, Charles Hepler, presented Mr. Helwig with his diploma from Ashland High School.
