Big Diamond will give it another try this Friday night June 30th with the annual running of the Georgie Stevenson Memorial on B&H Landscaping Night.
It has been a rough month of June for racing in general but especially for folks at Big Diamond Speedway. Mother Nature has not been a friend of the track with three out of four races scheduled for June being cancelled due to weather.
The Quandel Concrete Modfieds will race 40 laps with the winner receiving $6,000. The USS Achey Crate 602 Sportsman will also be taking part with their 20-lap feature paying $1,500. Also, on the racing card for this Friday night will be the Big Creek Concrete Crate 602 Rookies, the Red White and Blue Roadrunners along with the Xcel 600 Modifies all punctuated with a huge Fireworks display.
For those who do not know, Georgie Stevenson was an avid fan of the Big Diamond Speedway along with his family. Georgie and his family supported the speedway religiously each week. Sadly, Georgie was diagnosed with cancer at a young age and while fighting the dreaded disease, the young man worked hard to raise money for cancer research. Georgie’s battle with cancer concluded at the age of twelve when the courageous young man passed away. Georgie loved the sport of dirt racing especially at his home track, the Big Diamond Speedway.
After Georgie’s passing, his father George worked relentlessly to raise money for the terminally ill children who were also suffering from cancer. The Stevenson family’s goal was to help defray the costs of treatment and to also help the families to deal with anything that was thrown at them. Sadly, George died in 2015 but the Stevenson family’s presence radiates through the speedway with the annual running of the Georgie Stevenson Memorial.
Last season’s Georgie Stevenson Memorial race went to the “Diamond Cutter” Duane Howard after waging battle with current Quandel Concrete Points leader Brett Kressley. Both Howard and Kressley lead the way this season in wins with two victories apiece. Other wins this season have gone to Craig Von Dohren, Mike Gular, Louden Reimert and our latest winner Tim Fitzpatrick.
With a unique qualifying format for this Friday, look for some invaders to show up looking to steal the money away from the Big Diamond regulars. Already confirmed for this Friday are Billy Pauch Jr, Anthony Perrego and Jack Butler with the expectations of more to come.
Qualifying Format for Modifieds Only:
The Big Creek Concrete Crate 602 Rookies will be back in action after over a month off, Jax Yohn leads the way in wins and is also the points leader going into this week over Brennan Chapman and Danica Getz.
Alex Schoffstall will look to take his place as the all-time leading winner in the Red White and Blue Roadrunner division on Friday night. Schoffstall, who leads the way in wins this season is also closing in on points leader Chuck Fayash in the race for the championship.
Also, on the racing card for this Friday night will be the Xcel 600 Modifieds, who always entertain the crowd with their brand of racing.
Last but certainly not least, Jake and Jasmine Smulley will have a huge fireworks display to honor our great nation’s birthday!
The racing action will get underway on Friday night at 7:45 PM with hot laps starting at 7:15 PM
Pit gates will open Friday night at 5:00 PM with the Grandstand gate opening at 5:30 PM
