POTTSVILLE - A motor vehicle accident involving multiple vehicles occurred on July 18, 2023, around 3:10pm in the vicinity of Bob Weaver's Auto at 2174 West Market Street, Pottsville.
The incident led to a Nissan Altima being overturned and multiple parked vehicles being damaged.
According to the Pottsville Police, the driver of the 2023 Nissan Altima, identified as 57-year-old Dawn Buongiovanni from Orwigsburg, was reported to be trapped inside her vehicle, which was also reportedly on fire. Promptly dispatched to the scene were Pottsville Fire Department and Schuylkill EMS to respond to the emergency.
Fortunately, when the authorities arrived, Buongiovanni had already been assisted by bystanders and had safely exited her overturned vehicle. Despite the initial concern, Buongiovanni declined any medical treatment offered by EMS.
Based on the investigation conducted by the authorities, it was found that prior to the crash, Buongiovanni had been driving eastbound in the 2100 block of West Market Street at a high rate of speed. She then veered to the right, colliding with a legally parked and unoccupied 2014 Jeep Patriot belonging to Karen Strickland of Pottsville. After the initial collision, the Altima continued its path, traveling approximately 120 feet before spinning on the roadway.
The spinning vehicle faced westward and lost its front passenger tire. As a result, the Altima struck another legally parked and unoccupied vehicle, a 2015 Ford Explorer owned by Colleen Joulwan of Pottsville. The sequence of events didn't end there; Buongiovanni's vehicle eventually came to rest on its roof after crossing into the westbound lane of the 2100 block of West Market Street.
The final impact involved a collision with a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500, registered to Jesse Shay of Pottsville, which was also legally parked and unattended.
Based on statements from the driver, Dawn Buongiovanni, it was revealed that her confusion while navigating the area led to the accident. She expressed being upset due to not finding a safe location to turn around, and subsequently lost control of her vehicle, causing the multiple collisions.
Following the investigation, Ptlm. Delinko issued two citations to Buongiovanni: one for Careless Driving and another for Driving at an Unsafe Speed.
