The Rangers Hose Company in Girardville, in partnership with the Hazleton Fire Department and the McAdoo Fire Company Inc, have successfully secured a regional award through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program but they still need your help.
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant program, administered by FEMA, is designed to bolster the safety of both the public and firefighting personnel by mitigating fire-related hazards. After an evaluation, FEMA has determined that the project outlined in the Rangers Hose Company's application aligns seamlessly with the program's mission and is deserving of recognition.
The grant and cost-sharing award amounts to a substantial $834,300.00. This funding has been earmarked to replace the entire inventory of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), which plays an indispensable role in safeguarding the lives of firefighters. The new SCBA units are set to incorporate the latest state-of-the-art technology, ensuring enhanced protection for the brave men and women who confront dangerous situations daily.
Lieutenant Michael Zangari, speaking on behalf of the Rangers Hose Company, emphasized the urgency of this equipment upgrade. He noted that the current SCBAs, or air packs, are nearing the end of their operational lifespan and have endured substantial wear and tear. With approximately 35 active firefighters relying on this gear, the importance of its replacement cannot be overstated. Each SCBA air pack costs approximately $7,000 a piece and along with the rest of the gear to outfit a firefighter, that total is close to $13,000 per member.
To bridge the gap in funding required for the project, the Rangers Hose Company has launched a creative initiative known as the "Spooky Raffle." This campaign, running throughout the month of October, boasts a diverse array of prizes valued at over $12,000. By participating in this raffle, community members can contribute to the fundraising efforts and support their local firefighters.
It's worth noting that the Rangers Hose Company still requires additional financial support from the community to meet the total project cost.
"The support from the community is what drives us. Without the support of our community and surrounding areas, we wouldn't be able to do what we do. We do our best here to train as hard as we can because it's our lives on the line just as much as the public's." emphasized Lieutenant Zangari.
