HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Nativity BVM Holds off Shenandoah Valley



On Friday night, the Nativity BVM Green Wave faced off with Shenandoah Valley Blue Devils.

Nativity, coming into the game with a 4-3 season record, was determined to bounce back from their previous loss to Williams Valley. On the other side of the field, the Shenandoah Valley Blue Devils, with a 2-5 record, were seeking their third win of the season.

The game kicked off with Nativity taking an early lead after a drive down the field, culminating in a four-yard touchdown run by Sam Spolski on fourth down. Unfortunately for the Green Wave, the point after attempt failed, leaving the score at Nativity 6, Shenandoah Valley 0, with 4:27 remaining in the first quarter. As the first quarter came to a close, Nativity maintained their lead, but the Blue Devils were knocking on the door, threatening at Nativity's 18-yard line.

In the second quarter, the Blue Devils answered back as Nick Ryan hauled in a 13-yard touchdown pass from Ben Dempster, evening the score at 6-6 with 10:23 on the clock. However, Nativity swiftly responded by converting a fourth-and-short situation, resulting in a six-yard touchdown run by John Borrell. A successful two-point conversion by Noah Dolbin extended Nativity's lead to 14-6 with just 2 minutes remaining in the first half. Shenandoah Valley's Nick Ryan managed to intercept a Nativity pass, bringing an end to the first half.

At halftime, Nativity held a 14-6 lead, but the Blue Devils were not giving up. In the third quarter, they converted a fourth down to keep a drive alive, and Ben Dempster powered in from the 1-yard line, making it 14-12 with 3:53 left in the quarter.

The Green Wave, however, capitalized on a short field, with Sam Spolski scoring a 20-yard rushing touchdown late in the third quarter, leaving the score at 20-12 in Nativity's favor. Borrell added another touchdown with a six-yard run in the final quarter, though the two-point conversion failed, making it 26-12 with 9:08 left in the game.

Dempster and the Blue Devils weren't ready to throw in the towel. With 6:04 remaining, Dempster ran in one more touchdown, and Sam Mentusky's kick brought the score to Nativity 26, Shenandoah Valley 19.

The game took a dramatic turn as the Devils recovered a fumble at Nativity's 37-yard line with just 3:54 left on the clock. It was a tense moment for both teams, but Nativity managed to secure one more touchdown with a 53-yard run. The final score stood at Nativity BVM 32, Shenandoah Valley 19.

With this victory, Nativity improved to a 5-3 season record and will head home for their final game next week against Mahanoy Area on Saturday. They will close out their regular season against Minersville.

Shenandoah Valley's season record now stands at 2-6, and they will play their last home game next week against Williams Valley, with a final game against Mahanoy Area in Week 10 to conclude their regular season.
