NORTH SCHUYLKILL – On Wednesday, local first responders from the North Schuylkill District coverage area spent the day at North Schuylkill Elementary School to share fire prevention knowledge to eager young minds.
The firefighters from Lavelle and Ashland interacted with students from kindergarten to 6th grade.
During the programs, the Lavelle Assistant Chief, Jeremy Smallwood, addressed the students on a spectrum of fire prevention topics. Smallwood stressed the significance of awareness in the context of home fire prevention, shared fire safety practices, educated the children on the proper protocol for dialing 911 in emergencies, the importance of smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, and provided a glimpse into the life of a firefighter.
The firefighters demonstrated their tools and also gave the students a glimpse at the turnout gear they wear. This hands-on learning opportunity saw teachers, and even the school's principal, donning the firefighter's turnout gear to experience the weight and functionality firsthand.
Following the demonstrations and indoor sessions, the children were treated to an outdoor segment where they had the chance to explore the fire apparatus belonging to the Lavelle Volunteer Fire Company and the Washington Fire Company from Ashland.
