Schuylkill County Historical Society Announces Lineup of Events for October


The Schuylkill County Historical Society is set to engage history enthusiasts and curious minds alike with a diverse lineup of events throughout the month of October. 

From the fascinating history of the Pottsville Maroons football team to haunted history tours and discussions on local legends, the society has something for everyone.

Pottsville Maroons Football Team History Presentation

Diana Prosymchak, the Executive Director of the Schuylkill County Historical Society, will delve into the rich history of the Pottsville Maroons football team. The presentation is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 11th, and will take place at 305 N. Centre St., Pottsville. 

Admission is free for Society members and $5 for the general public. Reservations are required and can be made by contacting the Society at 570-622-7540.

Haunted History Tours

Get ready for spine-tingling adventures as the Schuylkill County Historical Society hosts Haunted History tours on three consecutive Saturdays – October 14th, 21st, and 28th. The Baber Cemetery tour will commence at 5:45 p.m. at 14th and Market streets, Pottsville, while the downtown Pottsville tour will begin at 8 p.m. at the Society's headquarters, 305 N. Centre St. 

The cost for each tour is $7 for children aged 6-13, $10 for Society members, and $12 for the general public. Reservations are essential and can be made by contacting the Society at 570-622-7540.

Hahn Motors History Program

Reading Deputy Fire Chief Michael Glore will present an informative program on the history of Hahn Motors, a crucial supplier of fire trucks to local fire companies throughout much of the 20th century. The event will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 18th, at the Majestic Theater, located at 209 N. Centre St., Pottsville. Glore will also discuss firefighting apparatus. 

Admission is complimentary for Society members and $10 for the general public. Reservations are required and can be made by contacting the Society at 570-622-7540.

"Instigations of the Devil" Book Discussion and Signing

Former Shenandoah Herald and Danville News writer John H. Paul III will discuss and sign copies of his book, "Instigations of the Devil," which explores the tragic story of two alleged lovers in Danville who were hanged in 1858 for their spouses' deaths. Paul, who contends that his research proves the innocence of the accused, is also petitioning the state for a pardon on their behalf. This thought-provoking event is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 25th, at the Schuylkill County Historical Society, 305 N. Centre St., Pottsville.

Local Reads Book Club Meeting

Join the Local Reads book club as they discuss "Appalachian: Schaumboch's Tavern" by James Wosochlo Jr., a gripping tale based on the life of a man believed to be the first American serial killer. The meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 26th, at the Schuylkill County Historical Society, 305 N. Centre St., Pottsville.
