Pottsville Mayor Dave Clews shared an update on the much-anticipated holiday decorations project, expressing gratitude for the support received during the Spirit of the Holidays fundraising campaign.
Launched in 2023, the campaign aimed to replace Christmas decorations that had served the city for over two decades. Thanks to the generosity of numerous individuals, businesses, and organizations, the fundraising efforts surpassed expectations, enabling the establishment of a long-term program for the maintenance and replacement of holiday decorations.
Following an extensive review process, a design befitting the essence of the city was chosen. Subsequently, an order for fifty new Christmas decorations was placed, and the additions arrived on November 14th, just in time for the holiday season. However, excitement turned to disappointment when the street department discovered several manufacturer defects during installation, posing safety concerns.
After consultations with representatives from Rileighs, it was decided that the most appropriate course of action would be to return the lights. Consequently, the city has opted to extend the lifespan of its existing decorations for one more year. Mayor Clews assured the community that in early 2024, new and improved decorations will be ordered to replace the aging ones.
Rileighs has pledged to collaborate with the city to rectify the issues and enhance the holiday light program. Despite the setback, Mayor Clews emphasized that Pottsville would still sparkle with the warmth of thousands of lights, albeit using decorations that have become synonymous with cherished holiday memories.
The mayor appealed for understanding and patience from the community, urging residents to view the situation as an opportunity to unite and fortify the spirit of togetherness during the holidays.
As a gesture of goodwill, Rileighs has committed to donating several cases of holiday lights to the community.
Businesses interested in receiving a set of lights are encouraged to contact City Hall at 570-622-1234, extension 1346.
