John Edward Hood
, 54, of Ashland, passed away Tuesday, December 26, 2023 at his residence. Born in Rome, New York, on October 29, 1969, he was the son of the late Ann Hood of Ashland. He was a graduate of the former Cardinal Brennon High School, class of 1987and the Thompson Institute. During his high school years, John worked at the Lee's Lanes in Ashland. He later worked at PHEAA and briefly at the Rite Aid in Ashland.

John was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Parish, Ashland. He was dedicated to his beautiful cat, Levi. John was the Treasurer of the Ashland Pennsylvania Little League and Treasurer and a founding member of Ashland Pennsylvania Baseball. John enjoyed attending and volunteering at the games. He was also an avid fan of the Miami Dolphins.

Survivors:

Two sons: Nicholas Hood and Andrew Hood, both of Manheim, PA.
Sisters: Colleen Martin (Clarksburg, MD), Kay Beth Paukovitz (Enola, PA)
Brothers: Chip Hood (St. Augustine, FL), Michel Hood (Kulpmont, PA), Daniel Hood (deceased), and William Hood (Harrisburg, PA)
Many Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews, and Cousins

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life, Mass of Christian Burial, January 2, 2024, at 11 AM, in St. Charles Borromeo Parish Church, 11th and Walnut Streets, Ashland. Msgr William F. Glosser will be celebrant. Visitation with family and friends will begin at 10 AM until service. The family requests memorials be made to Strays No More Animal Rescue, 705 McKnight St., Ashland, PA., 17921. or the Ashland Little League. 

The Richard W. Fritz Funeral Home, Ashland, is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Pamela M. Moyer
, 60, of Covered Bridge Rd., Pine Grove, passed away on Tuesday, December 26, 2023 at home surrounded by family.

Born on July 23, 1963 in Pottsville, she was a daughter of Patricia Reigle Boltz of Pine Grove and the late Charles W. Boltz, Sr.

Pamela had worked for Lowes Distribution Center and Dollar General.

Preceding her in death was a son Scott Moyer.

Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, Scott Moyer, a son Justin Moyer; a daughter Charity Moyer and companion Eric Schadle; step children, Veronica, Eric and Christopher Schadle; 10 grandchildren, Cameron, Kylee, Justin, Callie, Myron, and Charley Moyer, Hunter and Bryce Kane, Jeremiah and Daniel Schadle; two great grandchildren, Gracelynn Moyer and CJ Kane; two brothers, James Boltz and Charles Boltz, Jr.,a sister, Melissa and husband Ronald Miller; nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Services will be held at a later date.

The H. L. Snyder Funeral Home, Inc. Pine Grove is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Careyva was born on February 2, 1958 and peacefully passed away on December 25, 2023 at Geisinger Medical Center. He is the son of Anne and Joseph Careyva of Phineyville, PA. He is preceded in death by his son Nicholas, sister Rosemarie, and father Joseph.

He is survived by his children, Beth and Mark with respective spouses Benjamin Bard and Amanda Brown, and his grandchildren, Ava Bard and Anna Careyva. He is also survived by his siblings and their spouses Edward (Jill), Joann (Rick), Thomas (Oleysia), Scott (Renee), brother-in-law John, and many nieces and nephews.

His legacy of a love of farming and being outdoors lives on through his children, grandchildren, and all who knew him. Those who knew him best will remember his love of family and enthusiasm for the harvest. May he rest in eternal peace.

The funeral service to celebrate his life will be held on January 12, 2024 at St. Joseph’s Church in Sheppton with visitation hour at 10 am followed by mass at 11 am. Following mass, there will be a private burial service for family. The Stauffer-Breznik Funeral Home is honored to assist Joseph's family during this time of need.

Gary M. Zehner
, 70, of Andreas, passed away on Thursday, December 28, 2023, in his home. He was the husband of Jeanmarie (Hammel) Zehner. They were married on April 25, 1992, and celebrated 31 years of marriage. 

Born in Pottsville, he was the son of the late Marlin G. and Betty Jane (Williams) Zehner. He was a member of Zion’s Stone Church of West Penn Township. He was also a life member of West Penn Rod and Gun Club. He enjoyed gardening, canning, woodworking, and hunting. He loved to watch the wildlife in his backyard. 

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Kenneth “Kenny”, Terry, and Francis “Peck”. Surviving in addition to his wife, Jeanmarie, are a son, Shawn, of Tamaqua; two daughters, Karen, wife of John Brode, of Tamaqua, and Lisa Zehner, and her companion, Danny Coccio, of Tamaqua; brother, Brett Zehner, of Clamtown; two sisters, Nancy Zehner, of South Tamaqua, and Sandra, wife of Joseph Fritz, of Clamtown; seven grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be private with Rev. Russell Campbell officiating. Private interment in Zion’s Stone Church Cemetery. 

Arrangements are being handled by the Hartman Funeral Home, 1791 West Penn Pike, Rte. 309, New Ringgold.

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Waymond "Budda" Gray, who departed from this life unexpectedly on December 15, 2023, at home. 

Born on December 30, 1973, Budda touched many lives with his unwavering kindness and resolute spirit. His memories will forever be held in the hearts of those who had the pleasure of knowing him. May his soul rest in eternal peace. He loved pitbulls, especially Ish, and his cats Kobe, Gigi, Fat Matt, and Valeda. He was a "big kid," as he would say, spending a lot of time on his PS4 and building with Legos. He was a huge Lakers fan and always talked about his favorite, the Black Mamba Kobe Bryant.

He is survived by his mother, Cynthia Germany; Tammy Theriaque, girlfriend, and caregiver; daughters Miana Gray and Lachya Gray; a son, Malachi Gray; stepsons Jonathon and David Macario and Ricardo Barrientos; stepdaughter Silvia Barrientos and her boyfriend, Harold Marigildo; brothers and sisters; cousins; and many friends.

His family personally would like to thank the staff and residents at Shenandoah Senior Living Community, especially the Blue Wing staff, speech, physical, and occupational therapy who were very kind and compassionate during his stay. George Robert “Bob” Botek
, of Branch Township, passed away on Tuesday at St. Luke’s University Hospital, Allentown Campus.

Born on May 30, 1955 in Pottsville, he was the son of the late George and Evelyn (nee Venzl) Botek. He was a 1973 graduate of Minersville High School and worked in infrastructure construction, last working as a foreman.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Francis Botek, in 1963, Ronald Botek, in 2012, and Vincent Botek, in 2022.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, the former Donna Long; three children, Amy Smith, Minersville, Jennifer Botek, Minersville, and Daniel “DJ” Long (spouse, Nicole), Schuylkill Haven; twelve grandchildren, Alora Smith, Jordan Long, Kinsley Long, Jay Umberger, Lilly Long, Tyler Long, Jason Brown, Alivia Brown, Bryce Brown, Samantha Schweikert, James Long and Darrin Long; two great grandchildren, Luna Schweikert and Luke Schweikert. He is also survived by five siblings, Janet Gulas (spouse, Ken), Orwigsburg, Raymond Botek (spouse, Judy), Minersville, Evelyn Weber (spouse, Robert), Miami, FL, Richard Botek, Monticello, FL, and David Botek, Minersville; nieces and nephews

Lonna L. (Malafarina) Swantek
, 76 of Morea passed away on Tuesday, December 26, 2023 at Schuylkill Medical Center-East Norwegian Street, Pottsville.

Born at the former Ashland State Hospital, she was a daughter of the late Roy and Margaret (Shields) Malafarina.

She was a 1965 graduate of the former Ashland High School.

Lonna was first employed in the garment industry having worked at the former Model Garment, Frackville and then at the former Ashland Shirt Factory. She retired from the former Anthony’s Supermarket, Frackville.

She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Frackville and UNITE Garment Workers’ Union.

Surviving are her husband of twenty-three years, Thomas J. Swantek; one son, D.J. Mallams of Gordon; two brothers, Roy Malafarina of Mt. Carmel and Rick Mills of Fountain Springs; two sisters, Mary Wagner of Harrisburg and Margaret Schaffer of Locustdale; ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Preceding her in death in addition to her parents, are her son, Kurt Mallams and her sister, Linda Brown.

Religious services will be held on Friday, January 5, 2024 at 10:00 am at Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, 132 South Jardin Street, Shenandoah. Pastor Susan Hocking of the Simpson United Methodist Church, Gordon will officiate. Interment will follow in Saint Stanislaus Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights. A visitation will be held on Friday morning from 8:00 am until 10:00 am at the funeral home.

Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, Shenandoah is in care of the arrangements.

, 49, of Ashland went to heaven Thursday evening December 28th at home surrounded by his loving family.
