First Winter Storm Blankets Schuylkill County in 6 to 10 Inches of Snow

The first winter storm of the season swept through Schuylkill County, leaving behind a blanket of snow measuring 6 to 10 inches across the region.

The storm was accompanied by some disruptions, including traffic slowdowns, business closures, small power outages, and the cancellation of Sunday morning church services.

Interstate 81 experienced reduced speeds as the storm created hazardous driving conditions. PennDOT imposed a speed limit of 45 mph with several accidents being reported on the highway at the start of the storm.

The storm's impact was felt across the county, leading to the closure of most local businesses as residents opted to stay indoors and weather the wintry conditions.

Churchgoers woke up to the news of canceled Sunday morning services, as religious institutions prioritized the safety of their congregants in light of the inclement weather.

In addition to road closures, several hills in the area were shut down for short periods of time. Among these were the Shenandoah Heights Hill, the Blue Mountain south of Tamaqua, and the Gordon Mountain, all closed while stranded vehicles were cleared.

The heaviest of the snow ended around 8-9pm Saturday but then coated the snow with some freezing rain.

Here are the reported snowfall totals from various locations across Schuylkill County:
  • Ashland: 7 inches
  • Schuylkill Haven: 7 inches
  • Tower City: 7 inches
  • Shenandoah: 8 inches
  • Tamaqua: 9 inches
  • Pottsville: 6 inches
  • Zion Grove: 8 inches
  • Mahanoy City: 8 inches
  • Port Carbon: 7 inches
  • Minersville: 7 inches
  • Lake Wynonah: 8 inches
The measurements were collected and reported by dedicated Skook News followers.

Schuylkill County residents woke up Sunday morning to some light snow falling but by noon, peaks of Sun were helping raise temperatures and helped melt the snow.

By midday, main highways were cleared but local back roads and side streets were causing some issues.  Those back roads and side streets may cause some schools to delay Monday morning.
