Phyllis J. Carter
, 99, of Tamaqua and formerly of West Chester, died on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at home. She was the daughter of the late Charles H. and Esther (Fink) Carter. 

A 1942 graduate of Tamaqua High School, Phyllis earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Albright College in 1946. Before retiring in 1981, she was employed by the former Atlas Powder Company, later ICI Americas, as an analytical chemist and manager of product development and advertising. She also served as the 33rd president of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. Phyllis was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Tamaqua. She began serving as a director for the Tamaqua Public Library in 1981, where she also served on the Library Endowment Fund. 

She is survived by a niece, Nancy Reese and her husband William and their children, Douglas Reese (Melissa), Christine Butler (Richard), and Karen Reese, and a nephew, Thomas S. Carter and his children, Charles H. Carter III (Tammy), Peter Carter (Jennifer), and Laura Crawford (Peter) as well as 10 great-grand nieces and nephews. 

Phyllis was predeceased by a brother, Charles H. Carter, Jr., in 2017. 

A memorial service will be held at a later date. 

Arrangements are being handled by the Zizelmann-Gulla Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Tamaqua.

Ann Louise Conroy, LPN
, 70 of Lost Creek, passed away unexpectedly January 7th, 2024 in Raven Run at her son’s residence. Born on March 29, 1953, in Ashland PA, Ann was the daughter of the late Casimir Carl Kowalick and Frances Veronica (Sadusky) Kowalick. She was preceded in death by her husband, William “Babe” Conroy in 2015; brother, Frank Kowalick; and sister, Donna Robertson. Ann is survived by four sons, Bill (Pam) of Raven Run, Jim (Renee) of Clermont, FL, Brian of Pittsburgh and Chris of Shenandoah. Also surviving are grandchildren Kelsey, Emily, Will, Abby and McKenzie; brother, Raymond Kowalick; sister-in-law, Kathy; aunt, Marie Sadusky; nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Ann Louise was a joyful person with an infectious laugh. She was kind to everyone. She deeply loved her family and enjoyed family get togethers most of all. A great cook of polish heritage, Ann hosted many family meals utilizing recipes handed down from previous generations. She was an avid fan of Shenandoah Valley Athletics, attending games of numerous sports. Living in a sports family, Ann enjoyed watching the Phillies and Packers. She was also known to frequent the casinos to play the slots as a form of relaxation and entertainment. Her late husband, sons and grandchildren were the loves of her life. She saw the world through rose colored glasses and will be dearly missed.

In 1990, while still raising her children, Ann graduated from the North Schuylkill Vocational Technology Center as a Licensed Practical Nurse. In 2018, Ann retired from the former Good Samaritan Hospital and most recently worked per diem at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Schuylkill East Norwegian Street into 2023. She had many friends at the hospital and enjoyed seeing and collaborating with them.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30am on Monday January 15th, 2024 from Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, 132 S. Jardin Street, Shenandoah PA. A Mass of Christian Burial will then be celebrated at 10am in Divine Mercy Church, 232 West Cherry St, Shenandoah with Monsignor Ronald C. Bocian, Pastor, as the celebrant. Interment will follow in Annunciation BVM Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Sunday January 14th, and from 8:00 am to 9:30 am on Monday January 15th. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Shenandoah Community Ambulance, 229 N. Main St. Shenandoah PA 17976, the William Penn Fire Company No 1, 166 Mount Olive Blvd, Shenandoah PA 17976, or the Shenandoah Heights Fire Company, 148 Swatara Rd, Shenandoah PA 17976.
