Rite Aid in Pottsville is set to close in June.
If you drove down Route 61/Claude A Lorde Boulevard in Pottsville on Thursday, you would see the storing closing signs on the front of Rite Aid near the Mill Creek Avenue.
The closing is just one of hundreds of Rite Aid stores that the Philadelphia-based drugstore chain is closing after filing for bankruptcy in October. At the time, the company cited heavy debt and burden by litigation related to filling prescriptions for opioids as the reason for the bankruptcy.
Before the filing, the company had 2,100 locations across 17 states.
Since then, numerous closings have been announced and as of April 16th, 2024, 367 stores were closed or are scheduled to closed.
According to store employees, the location will officially close on June 17th, 2024 with the pharmacy closing on May 17th, 2024.
According to a corporate statement:
"Rite Aid regularly assesses its retail footprint to ensure we are operating efficiently while meeting the needs of our customers, communities, associates and overall business. In connection with the court-supervised process, we notified the Court of certain underperforming stores we are closing to further reduce rent expense and strengthen overall financial performance. At this time, we have not made or confirmed any decisions on additional specific store closures as part of our financial restructuring process. "
Customers can continue to pick up their prescriptions at the Pottsville CVS.
This was the second Rite Aid closing in the city in the past year. In September the downtown Pottsville Rite Aid location was closed.
Rite Aid still has locations in the county in Minersville, Frackville, Mahanoy City, Tamaqua, Shenandoah, and Ashland.
