Route 61 Improvement Project to Resume This Weekend in Schuylkill County

On Thursday, PennDOT announced work is scheduled to resume on Sunday, April 7th, 2024, on a project to improve Route 61 in southern Schuylkill County.
This project reported to improve the areas on Route 61 between University Drive and Mill Creek Avenue in North Manheim Township, City of Pottsville, Palo Alto and Schuylkill Haven Boroughs.

Work on the project includes roadway milling, roadway base repairs, paving, guide rail updates, Americans with Disabilities Act compliant curb ramps, and new pavement markings.

In 2023, the section from Manheim Road in Schuylkill Haven and the Mount Carbon Arch was completed.

According to the announcement, drivers should expect nighttime lane restrictions on Route 61 between Mt. Carbon Arch Road and Mall Road from 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM, Sundays through Thursdays.

PennDOT estimates this section of Route 61 has an average daily traffic volume that varies between 6,128 and 12,350 vehicles northbound and between 5,478 and 10,370 vehicles southbound.

The project began in February 2023 and is estimated at costing $7,026,789.

The entire project is expected to be finished in July 2024.
