Girardville Borough Council opted to suspend the operations of the borough's police department for the remainder of 2024.
The move follows a thorough consideration of resident feedback and financial implications.
Last month, Mayor Michael Zangari initiated a community survey to gauge public opinion regarding the future of Girardville's law enforcement. With 36 residents participating, 89% expressed support for suspending the local police force, advocating for reduced funding and reliance on external agencies for coverage.
Mayor Zangari agreed with the 89% and proposed the suspension to the council. The proposal received unanimous approval from the council members present.
Mayor Zangari outlined plans for ongoing discussions with neighboring police departments to negotiate coverage costs and consultations with the borough solicitor to prepare for the potential dissolution of the police department. He committed to providing regular updates to the council on the progress of these initiatives.
