Girardville Borough Council Votes to Suspend Police Department Through 2024

Girardville Borough Council opted to suspend the operations of the borough's police department for the remainder of 2024.

The move follows a thorough consideration of resident feedback and financial implications.

Last month, Mayor Michael Zangari initiated a community survey to gauge public opinion regarding the future of Girardville's law enforcement. With 36 residents participating, 89% expressed support for suspending the local police force, advocating for reduced funding and reliance on external agencies for coverage.

Mayor Zangari agreed with the 89% and proposed the suspension to the council. The proposal received unanimous approval from the council members present.

Mayor Zangari outlined plans for ongoing discussions with neighboring police departments to negotiate coverage costs and consultations with the borough solicitor to prepare for the potential dissolution of the police department. He committed to providing regular updates to the council on the progress of these initiatives.

In light of the suspension, Mayor Zangari advised borough residents against contacting borough hall for police-related matters, redirecting inquiries to appropriate external authorities.

Additionally, arrangements are being made with the Schuylkill County District Attorney's Office and the Pennsylvania State Police to handle evidence previously held by the Girardville Police Department.

The council meeting also saw the acceptance of resignations from Police Officers Brandon Gonzalez and James Patterson, effective immediately.
