One Seriously Injured in Interstate 78 Crash near Hamburg

The Pennsylvania State Police at Hamburg have released details on a crash that closed Interstate 78 near Hamburg for hours on Monday.

Troopers say the three-vehicle crash occurred just before 8:30am on Monday, July 1st, 2024 at mile marker 30.1.

The crash occurred as a tractor trailer traveling westbound within a work zone struck the center concrete barrier.  Several sections of barrier were pushed into the oncoming eastbound lanes.

The damaged barrier struck an Hyundai Sante Fe and tractor trailer traveling eastbound.    The SUV rolled and landed on its roof in the westbound lanes as a passenger was ejected.  The passenger was reported to have sustained serious injuries.

State Police did not report any other injuries.

The crash closed Interstate 78 in both directions for nearly 8 hours.

The crash was investigated by the Troop L Forensic Services Unit and CARS.

Also responding to the scene were the Hamburg Fire Company, Shoemakersville Fire Company, Northern Berks EMS, Hamburg Police, and PennDOT.
